The Turbo Pit

The Turbo Pit
Royals turbo Pit-bike came around the idea of something really small, going really fast and looking a bit crazy but totally awesome. From the feed back we’ve had it certainly nailed that!
The bike is a road registered YCF Factory pilot, that started its life with a 110cc semi auto with a carb set up. The 110 was certainly not going to be big enough. So it was upgraded to a 190cc Zongshen motor. This motor made all the difference, 5 speed box and torquey little beast.
The bike was a great laugh at this point, wheelies, shredding through traffic….but something was missing.
Graeme decided he wanted to turbo this little hooligan and that he did! To do this successfully though some things needed to be adjusted.
First… Carb to EFI conversion. To do this a Honda Grom wiring loom was selected to utilise an ARacer system for tuning, 02 sensors, auto tune and the basic controls needed for it to be road legal. This would make tuning the bike a whole lot easier and much more interesting.
Next was to install a 212cc big bore kit to the bike! This had some piston work done as the compression was 11:0:1 at this point, which for a turbo application was a little high.
Then Graeme put together a basic custom kit for the EFI conversion and made some adjustments to the ports. This included the following:
Aracer RC2
custom chimera flywheel with crank position sensor
Kehin 35mm throttle body
yuminashi injectors
Grom loom
Custom intake mounts
Ported intake and exhaust
The bike ripped after this and was at a really good point to start looking at getting a turbo set up fabricated and into the testing phase!
THE TURBO PART!

Using a small turbo for this application, a VZ21 was decided on being the best suited for this application.
A basic set up was constructed. Routing oil feeds, boost piping and vacuums lines.
Next was to get the exhaust system to feed the turbo for the magic to happen. A 02 post turbo was also fitted for use of AFR readings.
Ryan set about construction of an intake plenum for the Pit which included a blow of valve system! It looked awesome and levelled out the bike as the turbo was sticking out the left hand side.
Once we had everything in place it was time to get a base map set up and take this thing for a spin!
First ride I couldn’t stop smiling, the little motor singing, the turbo whistle and even the blow off valve kicking in! I knew Id never be able to sell this little thing!
We took it down to Spitfire Race Way in Cornwall for a drag day. Had a great time and enjoyed thrashing it down the 1/4 mile!
Still some tweaks to be done to get it on point, but you can check out some footage of the day on our Instagram!
